Japan provides US$ 51,277 (Gorkhapatra)

KATHMANDU, Aug 27: The Government of Japan has extended financial assistance US$ 51,277 to Shalpa Neer-Citizens’ Committee under its Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects Scheme.Shapla Neer is to implement the project for the ‘Alleviation of Difficulties of Working Children’ in Patan city of Lalitpur district in coordination with a local NGO-The Center to Assist and Protect Child Rights of Nepal (CAPCRON).
A grant contract to this effect was signed and exchanged at the Japanese Embassy in Kathmandu on Wednesday between Tatsuo Mizun, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal and Yukiko Fujisaki, resident representative of Shapla Neer-Nepal Office.
The grant assistance for Japanese NGO projects is a scheme to provide financial assistance for the implementation of social and economic development and emergency humanitarian assistance projects to be undertaken by Japanese NGOs in developing countries and regions.
The project targets working children who suffer exploitation and abuse by employers, and are left out with regards to support opportunities for health, education and economy.
The project will help reduce poverty through increasing opportunities for primary health care and education services which will be offered by establishing health posts and open-air classes, providing legal supports to ensure children’s rights, and vocational training for children with necessary skills to become drivers and plumbers, and rehabilitating or reintegrating them into their families.
Speaking on the occasion, ambassador Mizuno expressed his hope that the project would contribute to enhancing the welfare of children and ensuring the quality of their life.
He further said that the Japan-supported project for working children’s rights and welfare could further strengthen the friendly relationship between Japan and Nepal.
