JITCO urges fair trainee selection (Kantipur Daily)

KATHMANDU, FEB 03 -
The Japan International Training Cooperation Organisation (JITCO) has urged all the designated foreign employment agencies and the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) to send industrial trainees to Japan in a fair manner.JITCO senior vice president Kensuke Tsuzuki said, “We need a clear understanding with all 172 Nepali counterparts in this process of technology transfer to Nepal.”
Urging the selected agencies to take the maximum advantage of the opportunities available in Japan, he said that the industrial training being provided to Nepali trainees was the first stage of a new cooperation effort, and that if Nepal performed well under the JITCO programme, it could also get a chance to export labour to Japan.
Japan has been taking in 50,000 industrial trainees from 15 countries every year with 80 percent of them coming from China. Even though Nepal signed a memorandum of understanding to do so on Dec. 3, 2003, it has not been able to send any trainees as expected.
Tatsuo Mizuno, Japanese envoy to Nepal, said that Nepali trainees had not been able to go to Japan because of a misunderstanding about the opportunities offered.
Under the JITCO agreement, Nepali industrial trainees will be able to work under seven categories including 64 types of occupations and 120 selective jobs. The government has already issued a directive to send Nepali technical or industrial trainee workers to Japan. A potential trainee worker will have to spend around Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 60,000 if selected to go Japan.
According to FNCCI president Kush Kumar Joshi, the performance of six industrial trainees which it sent to Japan last year has been very good. Another group of 43 trainees are all set to leave for Japan.
