Japan agrees to give Rs 566m food aid (Kantipur Daily)
KATHMANDU, FEB 09 -
The Government of Japan on Tuesday agreed to extend a grant assistance of Rs. 566.44 million to the Government of Nepal for Food Aid (KR) in Japan’s fiscal year 2009.
Tatsuo Mizuno, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Rameshore Prasad Khanal, Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective governments.The assistance has been provided with the basic objective of enabling the country to procure rice and supply it to food-deficit districts. The Nepal Food Corporation is to distribute it through its national distribution network, said a press statement of the embassy.
Japan, being a development partner of Nepal, has been providing Food Aid to Nepal for the last several years. Food Aid is one of the oldest schemes of the Government of Japan, and, as of Japan’s fiscal year 2009, it has extended cumulative Food Aid worth 8.94 billion Japanese yen.
It will thus further contribute to the moving ahead of the peace process in Nepal, he added.
