KATHMANDU, APR 28 -
Japan has provided a grant assistance of Rs. 451 million to Nepal to fight climate change and promote clean energy.
Japanese Ambassador to Nepal Tatsuo Mizuno and Secretary of Ministry of Finance Rameshwor Khanal on Wednesday signed an agreement to implement the forest preservation programme.
The aid aims to address climate change issues laying special emphasis on adaptation, mitigation of climate change as well as to promote improved access to clean energy. On the occasion, the Jananese envoy said Nepal is taking initiatives to prevent the serious impact of global warming and stop the melting of Himalayan glaciers. The country is doing praiseworthy work in pollution control and natural resources management among South Asian countries, he said.
He stressed the need to control deforestation that is spreading at a rate of 1.7 percent annually. A nation cannot alone tackle global warming and climate change, but Nepal, being one of the leading countries fighting global warming, is expected to play a vital role in minimising green house gases emissions and encourage other countries to do the same, he said.
