US, Japan welcome CA extension (Kantipur News)

KATHMANDU, MAY 29 -
The United States has welcomed the political parties’ decision to extend the Constituent Assembly (CA) tenure. Issuing a press release on Saturday, the US Public Affairs Office in Kathmandu said it could not have happened without the willingness of political leaders to put the national interest ahead of partisan politics. “We applauded that commitment,” read the press release.
The US wished the CA to complete the important work of drafting a new constitution. For this, the political leadership of all parties must continue the dialogue to ensure the final implementation of critical issues related to the peace process, including the integration and rehabilitation of former Maoist combatants. “Now, with the goal of constitutional democracy in sight, we urge leaders to intensify negotiations on concluding the peace process and drafting the constitution,” said the statement.
The US said it would join the people of Nepal in hoping that leaders will continue to demonstrate the statesmanship that is critical at this important time in the nation’s history.
Likewise, Japan has also congratulated the Government and people of Nepal on the auspicious occasion of the Republic Day. ”Japan believes that the Republic Day is the best day to renew the commitment that the CA has promised to the people of Nepal,” the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu said issuing a press release. Welcoming yesterday’s political development that extended the Constituent Assembly tenure, Japan said this is the result of energetic efforts made by the political parties.
“It is Japan’s sincere wish that Nepal’s peace process will reach a logical conclusion through the peaceful dialogue and understanding among the political parties and that people’s age-long aspiration will be realized.”
“Japan is firmly committed and will continue to support Nepal’s effort in this endeavor and also confident that our friendly and cooperative relations will be further strengthened in the days ahead,” the release added.
